Danielle's Letter to Marvel Comics for Bear

The other day Danielle wrote an email to Marvel comics on Bear's behalf because he wants to "draw comics" when he grows up...

My son Bear, yes that is his real name, wants to be a marvel comic artist when he grows up, and definitely has the potential. He is 6 years old and we live in lansing, michigan. Any good schools you would recommend, or steps we should take to encourage this life dream? Thanks, Bear's Mom.

Right away, a guy named Nick wrote back...

Hi Bear's Mom! Tell Bear at his age all Bear needs to do is just draw! Keep drawing and having fun. I suggest you get him the book How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way. I got it at his age and and it was invaluable. I still use it today! The 3 major fundamentals to creating good comics are: 1. Storytelling 2. Anatomy 3. Perspective As for schools, I suggest going to school in New York City. That's where the major publishers are at, Marvel and DC Comics. He can also intern at them when he gets older. Bears young, he's got plenty of time. Most important of all right now is to just keep drawing. I look forward to seeing Bear's comics in the future. Tell Bear I say hi, and to keep up the great work! Nick (artist of Howtoons and a few Marvel comicbooks)

When we showed Bear the correspondence he nervously told us that he had since changed his mind and now wants to "sell things in the yard" instead. We have figured that he must be thinking of a garage sale we went to. He watches carefully when money changes hands and puts a lot of weight in that when it comes to speculating his life's work. For a while he wanted to be a cashier at Wal-Mart because they "get so much money."
