Birthday Road Trip

Bear turned 9 the other day and we had a great time up in Mackinaw with the Nelsons, Priests, and Pasqualis. Then it was off on a surprise roadtip to show Bear where he was born. He's been asking to go back for a while now and this was the last week of the summer so Dad, Bear, and I piled into the car relatively last minute and took off.

We visited the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Bear is maybe the biggest football fan I've ever met and, as hoped, he liked the Hall. There was a pre-season game there the night before that we watched on TV. When we got to the stadium there were still nachos and garbage and stuff in the stands but it was empty. Bear ran around on the field.

The day before, they said the "class of 2010 induction" crowd was so big that people waited in line for hours and just shuffled through the hall. We were there the day after that luckily and it was smooth sailing.

Bear took a picture I think of just about every display in there and read nearly everything.

Some catch at a rest stop in New Jersey. All the people at the rest stop had bluetooth headsets and were exactly what you'd expect to see in New Jersey.

When we got onto the island we took a cab to our old house. People were renting it so we didn't stay long -they took our picture for us. It was more rushed than I'd wished and a little surreal. I helped to build that deck and used to stack our firewood next to the stairs. The picture of Danielle and baby Bear on my desk at work was taken near the side of the house, about where the lawn chairs are leaning now. And somewhere in the woods back there is my wedding ring that flew off with the help of fish slime when I was throwing their guts to the birds after a seabass derby. I'm a nostalgia nerd.

Here is the terrific little house Carol lived. A moonbat or a marine biologist lives there now. Probably moonbat. I would like to live in a place about that small after the wild monkeys move out. Bear peed in the bushes around the corner. You're welcome, Oak Bluffs!

Dad and Bear share a nearly identical sense of humor.

Going to the beach. I looked for beach glass but found none.

This is the first time that Bear has swum in an ocean. It was fun to see his surprise when he got seawater in his mouth. He liked the waves, and the odd chunks of seaweed, and that he floated better.

Back onto the ferry after a long day of damp ocean-water shorts.
