Walmart: Economies of Scale... does not pay

Investigative reporter, Danielle Nelson, reports do not buy in bulk at Walmart.

We've always been taught economies of scale: buy in bulk to save money...right? Well, not a Walmart. I have repeatedly found that buying the smaller packages often gives you a better price per ounce/ item at Walmart. They assume we have all been trained to buy in bulk, which in my case they were right. I thought i was saving money by buying the larger packages, but upon further investigation with my cell phone calculator, I have found that size does not pay.

Examples:
eggs:1 dozen= $1....... 18= $1.86 (2 cent more/egg)
cheerios: 15 0unce=$1.84 (12.2 cents/oz).... 18 ounce=$2.24(12.4 cents/oz)
baby cereal: 8ounce=$1.72(21.5 cents/oz)....16ounce=the sticker is gone, crap.
I think the diapers were the same situation the last I checked.

Don't get me started on Sam's club... there's a few exceptions, but don't assume just because you pay to get in that you're gonna save some cash....fabulous exceptions to this are their huge feta cheese, bleu cheese, and mozzarella. the humus is also a pretty good deal. Definitely not baby supplies as far as i have found. Formula, diapers, superman the original movie dvds....nope.
To figure out the cost efficency, divide cost by item/ounce
ex/// $5.74 divided by number of diapers or ounces

i don't know... your walmart might be different. just divide the price by number of daipers to see cost per daiper. in mine its very close.

Burt found this out years ago. The small size is high price the large is OK the medium size is almost always the cheaper. In MI i think it is law that they put price per lb.,oz, item etc. on the shelf label. years ago I would take my calculater to figure the best deal.

I got the "reporter" bit. But here's what happened to me...I tasted the little oranges at Cosco. They were so good and juicy that I bought a bag of about 100. Dad and Dean told me they were DRY! Now what??
